Hoopies Came From NewellLou’s brother-in-law Eddie always said Lou’s kids were Hoop-alians. (Pronounced HOOP-AL-YINS) That was because Lou was from Newell, West Virginia where folk sometimes got referred to as Hoopies, and Lou’s husband Joe was Italian which made the kids half Hoopie and half Italian; thus they were Hoop-alians!Lou’s mother and father worked for the Homer Laughlin China Company which began in 1887 as Laughlin Pottery in East Liverpool, Ohio. Over the years they helped make thousands of pieces of dinnerware, including today’s well known Fiestaware which started in 1936.Enjoy a video about this famous old company, that may have been the very origin of West Virginia’s Hoopies!
